UIF Sophia主催、上智大学後援の2日間のイベント

10月29日、30日の2日間、上智大学の学生団体 University Innovation Fellows (UIF) Sophia主催の「SDGs × イノベーションスパーカー」が開催されました。学生・教職員の創造性を育み、学内のサステナビリティ課題の解決に向けて協働することを目的としたイベントです。本イベントは、「上智・学生チャレンジ支援金制度」により実現したものです。10月29日は英語、10月30日は日本語で行われ、基調講演、デザイン思考ワークショップ、アイデアコンペティションが行われました。

SDGs x Innovation Sparker hosted by UIF Sophia and sponsored by Sophia University

On October 29th and 30th, 2022, University Innovation Fellows (UIF) Sophia hosted the SDGs x Innovation Sparker – an event aimed at fostering creativity and collaboration among students, faculty and staff for working towards a sustainable campus. Made possible through the generous support of the Sophia Student Challenge Support Grant, the event was held in English (October 29th) and Japanese (October 30th), and consisted of a keynote presentation, a Design Thinking workshop, and an idea competition.

廃棄物ゼロ・循環型キャンパスの実現に向けて

このイベントには、上智大学の15以上の学部から約90名の学生・教職員が集まりました。SDGsのフレームワークにデザイン思考を適用し、キャンパスのサステナビリティについて議論し、解決策やアイデアを導き出しました。参加者は、「取る、作る、捨てる」という現在の直線的な経済モデルからの根本的な転換を意味するサステナビリティと循環型社会について学びました。特に、基調講演者である循環型経済の専門家2名からは、貴重な洞察を得ることができました。英語イベントでは株式会社ロフトワークのサステナビリティ・エグゼクティブ、FabCafeのチーフコミュニティオフィサー（CCO）であるスチュワート・ケルシー氏が、日本語イベントでは株式会社fog のCEOで、循環ラボélab（えらぼ）の 共同創設者である大山貴子氏が、それぞれ基調講演者として登壇しました。

Achieving a zero waste and circular campus

The event brought together around 90 students, faculty and staff members from more than 15 departments in Sophia. They discussed and created solutions for campus sustainability by applying a Design Thinking mindset to the SDGs framework. Participants learnt about sustainability and circularity, which represent a fundamental shift away from today’s linear economic model of “take, make, waste”. In particular, they gained valuable insight from the guest speakers, two professionals working in the circular economy: Kelsie Stewart, Sustainability Executive at Loftwork and Chief Community Officer at FabCafe, for the English event, and Takako Ohyama, CEO of fog, inc. and co-founder of a circular laboratory called élab, for the Japanese event.

ゼロ・ウェイストの創造的な解決策を探る

基調講演の後、参加者は「四谷キャンパスで資源を循環させ、『ゴミ』を無くすにはどうしたらいいか？」という課題を設定し、キャンパス内のゴミ問題を特定・解決するデザイン思考のワークショップに取り組みました。人間中心のニーズを探り、変化の機会を見つけると同時に、自然の生態系への影響も考慮し、驚きと創造性と笑いに満ちたテンポの良いチームワークを楽しみながら、ワークショップを進めました。ワークショップの最終段階では、自分たちのアイデアを物理的なプロトタイプに落とし込みました。

Sparking creative zero-waste solutions

Following the keynote presentations, participants engaged in a Design Thinking workshop focused on identifying and addressing waste problems on campus, framed as a challenge: “How might we circulate resources and prevent waste from being generated on Yotsuya Campus?” They explored human-centered needs and discovered opportunities for change at the same time as considering the impact on the natural ecosystem, all while enjoying a fast-paced teamwork process full of surprises, creativity, and laughter. In the last phase of the workshop, they turned their ideas into physical prototypes.

イベントの最終段階では、参加者がゲスト審査員の前で自分のアイデアを発表しました。理工学部や経済学部の幅広い分野からの教授陣と、サステナビリティ推進本部の職員が審査員として協力してくださいました。英語イベントの優勝チームは「教科書や本などの循環を作るための大学内レンタルシステムを立ち上げる」というアイデアを発表し、日本語イベントの優勝チームは、「フードロス問題への解決として『上智ファーム』のスタート：自分達で野菜や植物を育てる実践型プログラムを作る」というアイデアを紹介。他にも多くの面白いアイデアが誕生しました。

In the final phase of the event, participants presented their ideas in front of a panel of judges. The judges included professors from faculties ranging from the Faculty of Science and Technology to the Faculty of Economics, and a staff representative from the Office of Sophia Sustainability Promotion. The winners of the English idea competition came up with the idea to launch an on-campus textbook return and rental system to create a circulation of books that can be passed to the next person in need without requiring them to “buy new.” The winners of the Japanese competition introduced the idea to create a “Sophia Farm” as part of an experiential learning program that aims to foster a culture that values food and does not waste it.

教育学科SPSF2年の坂本里伊菜さん：「まず、何かの目的のために自分達でプロジェクトや実際に自分たちが何をどうする事が出来るのか具体的に考えたのは初めての経験だったのでとても興味深く、面白かったです。この経験から、人間が一人一人違うように、ひとつの問題へのアプローチの仕方も様々で、世の中に納得のいかないことだったり、こう変わって欲しいと願う事があれば、誰かが何かをしてくれるのを待つのではなく、自分が自らの手で周りの人とproblem-solvingに貢献できたらとても素敵だと思いました」

グローバル・スタディーズ研究科修士2年のメディ・マタニュさん：「サステナビリティは、現在世界が直面している気候変動の危機を考えると、取り組まなければならない重要なトピックです。そのため、UIFが持続可能性の分野で活躍するゲストスピーカーによるプレゼンテーションと参加型ワークショップを通じて、SDGsをより詳しく見る機会を与えてくれたことが本当に嬉しかったです。基調講演を通して、日本における持続可能性の実践を向上させるための様々な取り組みについてより深く理解することができましたし、ワークショップでは、SDGsを尊重しながら、みんなの日常生活を向上させる方法を考える良い機会となりました」

物質生命理工学科グリーンサイエンスコース2年の吉田まりんさん：「このワークショップは、私がこれまで参加したイベントの中で最もよく組織された、魅力的なイベントの一つでした。循環型経済について何も知らなかった私でも、基調講演やデザイン思考ワークショップを通じて紹介されたコンセプトをもとに、アイデアを学び、提案することができました。アイデアを考え、発表する時間は短かったのですが、主催者は不完全な部分があっても、それを積み重ねていくことを勧めてくれました。どのチームも納得のいく提案ができていたことは、アイデアコンペティションを見れば明らかです。このイベントは、自分の居心地の良い場所から一歩踏み出し、地球規模の持続可能性を実現するためにできるローカルな努力について考える動機付けとなりました」

持続可能な未来へと進むソフィアンズ

今日、世界はかつてないほど、楽観的で創造的な自信と協調性をもって、複雑なサステナビリティの課題に取り組むことができるリーダーを必要としています。UIF Sophiaでは、ポジティブな変化の創造はキャンパスから始まると考えています。SDGs × イノベーションスパーカーは、参加者に、どんなに困難な問題であっても、その解決のために新しい考え方やツールを採用し、適用することを奨励しました。UIF Sophiaイベントリーダーのショート真菜と長井珠李は、「社会にポジティブなインパクトを与えることは、今日から私たちにもできることだと知ってほしい」と語っています。UIF SophiaチームのTシャツに書かれているメッセージは、ポジティブな変化をもたらす方法を最もよく表しています。「今いるところから、今あるものを使って、今自分にできることを、協力できる人と共に」

Sarah Kai, SPSF Department of Economics, 2nd year: “The SDGs x Innovation Sparker event was the first workshop I’ve ever gone to in my life, and I loved how I was able to interact with new people, collaborate, and exchange ideas. Each person and group brought their own creative ideas and skills through the workshop, allowing me to gain new insights and different perspectives towards innovation. The workshop overall was an amazing opportunity for me to learn new things about SDGs and innovation, and build connections with new people.”

Riina Sakamoto, SPSF Department of Education, 2nd year: “It was my first time to build a project for a specific purpose and to think in concrete ways about what we could actually do, so it was very interesting and fun. This experience made me realize that, just as every person is different, there are different ways of approaching a problem. It also made me realize that if there is something in the world that we do not agree with or wish to see changed, it is an opportunity to solve the problem with the people around us, rather than waiting for someone else to do something for us.”

Mehdi Matagne, Graduate Program of Global Studies, M.A. 2nd year: “Sustainability is a critical topic that must be addressed considering the global climate crisis the world is currently going through. Hence, I was really glad that UIF gave us the opportunity to take a closer look at SDGs through the presentation by a guest speaker working in the sustainability field and through the participative workshop. Thanks to the presentation I was able to get a better insight of the different initiatives taken to improve sustainability practices in Japan, and the workshop was a great opportunity to think about how to improve everyone’s daily life while respecting the SDGs.”

Marin Yoshida, Faculty of Science and Technology Green Science, 2nd year: “This workshop was one of the most well-organized, engaging events that I have ever attended. Even though I knew nothing of circular economy, I was able to learn and propose ideas based on the concepts introduced through the keynote talk and design thinking workshop. Although it was a short period of time to think of ideas and present them, the organizers encouraged us to keep building on them, even if there were imperfections. It was clear from the idea pitch competition that every team was able to come up with a satisfying proposal. This event motivated me to step out of my comfort zone and to think about the local effort that we can make to achieve global sustainability.”

Sophians Towards Sustainable Futures

Today, more than ever before, the world needs leaders who can tackle the complex sustainability challenges of our time with optimism, creative confidence, and a collaborative spirit. UIF Sophia believes that creating positive change starts on campus. SDGs x Innovation Sparker encouraged participants to adopt and apply new mindsets and tools for solving problems, however daunting they might seem. “We want everyone to know that creating positive social impact is something we are all capable of doing, starting today,” said UIF Sophia event leaders Mana Short and Giuli Nagai. Perhaps the t-shirts worn by the UIF Sophia team organizers best sum up the way to bring about positive change: “Start where we are, use what we have, do what we can, with who we can.”
