Silicon Valley Meetup Vol.1

大学の中と外で、いまおきているあれこれを紹介する「上智のいまを発見」。学内のサステナビリティ課題の解決に日頃から取り組んでいるUniversity Innovation Fellows Sophiaが寄稿してくれました。米国スタンフォード大学主催のミートアップに参加したレポートの前編をお届けします！

3月24日から26日までの3日間、University Innovation Fellows Sophiaの8名はスタンフォード大学で開催された2023シリコンバレーミートアップ（Silicon Valley Meetup）に参加し、高等教育界とその先に変革をもたらすことに取り組む「チェンジメーカー」たちの刺激的なグローバルコミュニティに加わりました。

Find Sophia Now introduces a variety of things that happen on and off campus. University Innovation Fellows Sophia, who has been actively working on solving sustainability issues within our campus, has kindly contributed this article. We present the first part of their report on the meetup hosted by Stanford University in the United States.

On March 24-26, eight Sophia University Innovation Fellows (UIF) attended the 2023 Silicon Valley Meetup at Stanford University. They joined an inspiring global community of changemakers engaged in creating change in higher education and beyond.

不確実で複雑性に満ちた今日の世界において、私たちの周囲に変化をもたらそうとするのは、とても困難で孤独にさえ感じられる行動かもしれません。そんな中、私たちはどう問題と向き合い、解決策を編み出し、前へ進むことへと繋げれば良いのでしょうか、そして誰と一緒にその変化を実現する道のりを歩んでいけば良いのでしょうか。

In a world full of uncertainty and complexity, creating change in our communities can feel daunting and even lonely at times. Where do we even begin to take action for the issues we care about? And with whom?

Meeting Fellows from Around the World

今回のUIFシリコンバレーミートアップには、世界中から300人以上の学生と教職員が集いました。創造性や想像力の大切さについて、またコラボレーションとチームワークを促進するコミュニティが存在することの力強さと重要性について、大いなる学びがありました。刺激的で新しい出会いがあり、世界中から集まる学生たちが取り組むプロジェクトについて知り、互いの経験を共有しました。そして何より、公平で持続可能な未来を築くために行動を起こそうとしているのは私たちだけではない、ということを再認識する貴重な機会となりました。上智大学でのプロジェクトを「他者のために、他者とともに（For Others, With Others）」継続していこうという新しい希望と目標が与えられました。

Gathering with more than 300 students and faculty from around the world showed us the power and importance of being part of a diverse community of learners and practitioners that encourages creativity, imagination, and radical collaboration. The 3-day global meetup was full of inspiring new encounters, stimulating learning experiences, and opportunities to share and gain new ideas for the projects we are working on at our home institutions. Above all, the meetup reminded us that we are not alone in taking action to build a more equitable and sustainable future, and it inspired us to continue working on projects at Sophia “For Others, With Others.”

現地到着後、ミートアップへの期待感で溢れる「デザインスクール（UIFプログラムを開催するd.school)」へと向かいました。全体スケジュールは把握していたものの、何が私たちを待ち受けているのか、期待と共に緊張感も覚えながら会場に入りました。

Despite knowing the details of the schedule ahead of time, when we arrived at Stanford’s d.school (design school) we did not really know what to expect. We were excited and anxious at the same time.

手ごたえのある学び

A Rewarding Learning Experience

ミートアップでは約20以上の「セッション」が用意されており、参加者はその中から5つを選ぶことができました。セッションは、d.schoolの講師やスタンフォード大学の教授、そして過去のUIFプログラム経験者たちにより主導されました。リーダーシップ強化のために体育館で体を動かす体験型のものから、デザイン思考を活用する起業家と繋がるためのもの、また自分のキャリアをよりよく想像するための秘訣について学ぶものまで、非常にバラエティに富んだ内容となっていました。セッションに参加する中で、自分自身と他者、そしてイノベーションや起業家精神についての理解を深めることができました。

これらのセッションはミートアップのほんの一部でした。他にもアイスブレーカーゲーム、UIFフェロー卒業生の経験をベースとした講演、議題を自分で設定する参加者主体型会議「アンカンファレンス」など、様々なアクティビティが行われました。他大学のフェローと交流を深める機会もあり、共通の意欲や熱意もあってか、すぐに打ち解けることができました。対面開催のミートアップに参加したことを通して、これまで以上に世界中の学生や教職員たちと繋がることができ、同じ意欲や願いを持つ人たちが世界中にいることを再認識し、さらなるボーダーレスな共同プロジェクトを企画するという新しいビジョンも得られました。他大学のフェローたちがチェンジメーカーになるために地道な努力を続けているのを知ったことは、私たちにとってかけがえのない経験となりました。

そして何よりも印象的だったのは、UIFという環境の心地良さでした。例えば初日から、失敗をポジティブな学びの機会と捉える習慣にしようと、間違いがあった時には拍手や笑顔で互いを受け入れることを教わりました。自分の殻から一歩踏み出すことができ、たとえ初対面であっても同じ志を持つ人たちとコラボレーションできるというポジティブな雰囲気を作り出すことを経験しました。この経験はデザイン思考に対する見方を変化させ、デザイン思考は単なる問題解決のツールだけでなく、失敗は成功への一歩であると考えるマインドセットであることを理解しました。私たちはUIFフェローとして、これからも「デザイン思考家」というライフスタイルを日常的に実践するために、互いに支え合い、コミュニティ全体で責任を分かち合い、助け合って行こうと志を新たにしました。

The d.school organized over 20 sessions, in which all participants individually selected five sessions to join during the 3 days. The sessions were led by instructors at the d.school, professors at Stanford, and fellows from past cohorts who went through the UIF program themselves. Through dancing across a gym to experience the power of embodied leadership, participating in workshops that connect people using design thinking, and reflecting on our personal lives to discover our needs and better imagine our careers, we deepened our understanding of not only innovation and entrepreneurship, but most importantly, of ourselves and others.

These interactive and mindful sessions were just one part of the entire UIF Silicon Valley Meetup. There were also stokes or icebreaker activities, inspirational talks from past UI Fellows, and an unconference where we (all the participants) set the agenda and formed groups based on prompts and questions that interested us. We engaged in countless conversations with others throughout the meetup, and we felt an instant connection with those we met for their drive and aspirations to inspire change. Connecting with other participants and hearing about their ongoing journeys of be(com)ing changemakers was priceless.

From the very first activity on day one that taught us how to celebrate mistakes, together we stepped out of our comfort zones, creating an atmosphere of collaboration where diversity and like-mindedness coexisted. Through this experience, we came to realize that design thinking is not just another problem-solving methodology or technique that we learn through the UIF program, but rather, it is a lifestyle in which the quantity of ideas are valued more than their quality, failures are celebrated, and iteration is key. What is more, we learned the importance of gathering together as a community, supporting one another, and holding each other accountable as we commit ourselves to practicing this lifestyle of a design thinker in our everyday lives.

It seems that UIF Sophia has gained additional momentum in their activities through meeting like-minded peers from around the world and sharing experiences. Next week, we will bring you individual participants’ stories.
