Sophia Dormitory Study Tour: KRUKKU FIELDS

上智大学直営寮（枝川寮・祖師谷国際交流会館・アルペ国際学生寮）は、国籍、宗教、文化等、多様なバックグラウンドを持つ学生たちが暮らす教育寮です。近年、学生の主体的な学びや成長実感が重視されていますが、共同生活や交流の機会を通じて、直営寮生たちはどのような成長実感や気づきを得ているのでしょうか？　

Sophia dormitories (Edagawa Men’s Dormitory, Soshigaya International House, and Arrupe International Residence) are educational dormitories where students from diverse backgrounds live and spend time together. Let’s find out how students grow and acquire self awareness through dormitory life from following articles.

直営寮では、教育プログラムとして2023年度より「Sophia Dormitory Study Tour」を開催しています。これは、SDGsや社会課題に取り組む現場に赴き、現地での体験や人との触れ合いを通じて寮の仲間と課題解決を探求し、リーダーシップ、コミュニケーション能力、行動力等、将来役立つスキルを身に付けられる日帰りツアーです。直営寮では留学生も多く暮らしているため、ツアーは日英両言語で行われます。

今回は「KRUKKU FIELDSに学ぶ持続可能な”循環型農業”」について祖師谷国際交流会館寮生のRAVINDRAN ABISHAさん（国際教養学科交換留学生）に報告をしていただきました。

“Sophia Dormitory Study Tour” is held as a one-day educational program since 2023, for those who lives in dormitories owned and directly operated by the University. This involves going to the field where SDGs and social issues are being tackled, exploring problem-solving with dorm mates through on-site experience and interaction with people, and acquiring skills that will be useful in the future, such as leadership, communication skills, and the ability to take action. Since there are many international students live in Sophia dormitories, tours are conducted in both Japanese and English.

RAVINDRAN ABISHA, an exchange student in the Department of Liberal Arts and a resident of Soshigaya International House, gave a report on “Sustainable Circular Agriculture to Learn from KRUKKU FIELDS.”

5月17日に実施されたKurkku Fieldsツアーは、千葉県木更津市の郊外で持続可能な農業の実践を学ぶ素晴らしい機会でした。当日は雨が降っていましたが、ガイドの方は丁寧に施設を案内してくれました。

私たちは、水牛の糞から堆肥を作る工程について学びました。日本国内で飼育されている水牛は今現在約90頭と言われていますが、そのうちKurkku Fieldsには今現在、35頭の水牛が飼育されているそうです！ その水牛のミルクは、新鮮で美味しいモッツァレラチーズの製造に使われています。

The Kurkku Fields Tour held on May 17 has been a wonderful opportunity to discover sustainable farming practices on the outskirts of Chiba Prefecture, in Kisarazu. The rain didn’t deter our guide from giving us a comprehensive tour of the facilities.

We learned about the production of compost using the feces of the water buffaloes on the farm. It is said that there are currently about 90 water buffalo being raised in Japan, and of those, 35 are reportedly being kept at Kurkku Fields！ The milk they produce is used to make fresh and delicious mozzarella.

私は特に「エディブルガーデン（食べられる庭）」が気に入りました。そこには料理に使える多くの花やハーブが育てられていました。昼食にいただいたお弁当には、この庭で育てられた食用花を使ったサラダが入っていました。

エディブルガーデンの近くには「バグハウス（虫の家）」が設置されており、テントウムシなどの益虫が住み着いて、畑の害虫を抑える役割を果たしています。また、私たちは玉ねぎやそら豆を収穫して持ち帰ることができ、野菜の苗も鉢植えでいただきました。

I really enjoyed edible garden, with many flowers and herbs that can be used for cooking purposes. The savory bento we enjoyed at lunchtime had a salad made with edible flowers from the garden.

Nearby the edible garden, a bug house was constructed, providing shelter to lady bugs and other insects that help regulate the presence of parasites in the fields. We also got to harvest some onions and soramame to bring home and potted sprouts of vegetables.

Kurkku Fieldsは今もなお発展を続けており、持続可能性を高める新たな方法を模索しています。たとえば、鶏に必要なカルシウムを補うために、千葉県でわかめの生産に使われた牡蠣の殻を再利用する方法が考案されました。最後に、学生である私たちも、グループプロジェクトの中でKurkku Fieldsに新たなサステナブルスペースを提案しました。

As a flourishing project, Kurkku fields keep on finding new ways of sustainability. To provide the calcium needs of the chickens, the staff found a way to recycle the oyster shells used in Chiba prefecture to produce wakame (seaweed). Finally, as students, we also thought of new sustainable spaces to create in Kurkku fields during a group project.
