日本での就職活動をサポート！祖師谷寮でキャリアセミナーを開催　Helping residents doing job-hunting in Japan—Career seminars held at Soshigaya Dormitory

大学の中と外で、いまおきているあれこれを紹介する「上智のいまを発見」。今回は、上智の直営寮である「祖師谷国際交流会館」（以下、祖師谷寮）のキャリアセミナーの様子を紹介します。

祖師谷寮は、国籍、宗教、文化、言語等を問わず様々な価値観を持つ学生が集う教育寮です。寮生は約15名ずつの「リビンググループ」というコミュニティに属していて、「リビンググループリーダー（LGL）」が寮生活のサポートや交流イベント企画など、様々な活動をしています。 寮生向けのキャリアセミナーもそのひとつ。2021年度は春学期・秋学期にそれぞれオンラインのキャリアセミナーが開催されました。企画から当日の司会進行まで全てLGLが担当する寮生による寮生のためのセミナーです。

Find Sophia Now introduces a variety of things that happen on and off campus. In this issue, we introduce the career seminars at the Soshigaya International House (Soshigaya Dorm), a dormitory directly managed by Sophia University.
 
The Soshigaya Dormitory is an educational dormitory where students of all nationalities, religions, cultures, languages, etc., and with a variety of values live together. Each resident belongs to a community unit called the “Living Group” of about 15 people, and the “Living Group Leader (LGL)” supports dormitory life, plans exchange events, and engages in various other activities.
One of those activity is the career seminars for resident. In the academic year of 2021, two online career seminars were held in the Spring and Fall semesters. This seminar is held in a concept as for residents, by students where LGLs were in charge of all process from planning to hosting the event on the day.

春学期は、上智大学キャリアセンター職員と就職活動を終えた2名のLGL経験者が、日本での就職活動や企業選び、インターンシップなどについて話しました。秋学期は6名の寮生や卒寮生が登場。「文系の就活生」、「理系の就活生」、「日系企業を目指す学生」という3つのグループに分け、参加者が希望するグループでゲストスピーカーと対話しつつ進める寮生参加型のセミナーを実施しました。
 
大学生にとって最も高い関心事ともいえる就職活動。祖師谷寮では多数の留学生が暮らしていますが、日本での就職を目指す留学生の中には、日本特有の就活スタイルが分からず不安を抱えている学生も多いです。そんな寮生の悩みに寄り添い、満足のいくキャリアを歩んでほしいと、LGLたちが試行錯誤しながら企画を練り上げました。
上智大学キャリアセンターでも外国人留学生対象のセミナー等を開催していますが、祖師谷寮のキャリアセミナーは寮生や卒寮生が後輩に向けて話すため、より身近に感じられるのが特徴です。

In the Spring semester, a staff member of Sophia University Career Center and two former LGLs who had completed their job search spoke about job hunting such as choosing a company and doing internships in Japan. The Fall semester seminar featured six residents and graduates. They were divided into three groups: “Job hunters in the humanities,” “Job hunters in the sciences,” and “Residents aiming for Japanese companies” resulting in a proactive seminar where participants could interact with guest speakers in groups of their choice.

Job hunting is one of the most common concerns for university students. There are many international students living in Soshigaya dormitory, and many of them are worried about how to find a job in Japan as they do not have a clear understanding of the unique style of Japanese job-hunting system. In order to help these dormitory students with their worries and to help them find satisfying careers, the LGLs tried their best in planning these seminars through trial and error. Although the university Career Center also holds seminars for international students, but these career seminars at Soshigaya dorm are characterized by the fact that residents and graduates directly speak to younger ones, making them feel more familiar and easier to communicate.

自身も就活生であるLGLの浅岡なつきさん（法律学科3年）は、「一番難しかったのはゲストスピーカーの選定です。候補のOB・OGは多忙でスケジュールが合わないことが多々ありました。皆で候補者を多く出しあったり、依頼する時は熱意を込めてセミナーの趣旨を説明するなど工夫して、6名ものゲストスピーカーをお呼びすることができ嬉しかったです。また、コロナ禍でゲストスピーカーやLGLメンバーと直接集まって打ち合わせることができませんでしたが、こまめに連絡を取ってスムーズに進められたのも良かったです」と振り返りました。
 
カッラーイ未来さん（ロシア語学科2年）は、「大変なこともありましたが、メンバー全員がベストを尽くし、困った時はいつでも連絡を取り助け合うことができました。チームで活動する際は一人ひとりが一生懸命取り組むのと同時に、必要な時には助けを求めることも重要だということを学びました」と話しています。
 
キャリアセミナーは、ゲストスピーカーとして参加した寮生にとっても貴重な機会となったようです。

イベント当日はまだ就職活動中だったというゲストスピーカーの樫野潤仁さん（博士前期課程・理工学専攻2年）は、「日本にまだ入国できないものの日本で就職したい留学生たちも参加していました。イベント自体の時間は短かったけれど、少しでも後輩たちの役に立てたなら嬉しいです」と話しました。
 
就職活動を終えて参加した寮生のFang Yinyueさん（経済学科4年）は、「キャリアセミナーに参加した寮生のほとんどが日本での就職活動に詳しくなかったため、就職活動の基本や自身の経験をシェアしました。言語の壁、文化の壁、制度の壁…留学生にとって就職活動は日本人学生より遥かに大変かと思います。就活という“ご縁”を掴むためには、努力や根気、勉強などが欠かせませんが、人事を尽くせば、必ずいい結果が待っています！」と後輩にエールを送りました。

Natsuki Asaoka (3^rd year, Department of Law), an LGL who is also doing job hunting, shared, “The most difficult part was selecting the guest speakers. The alumni who were speaker candidates were very busy and their schedules often did not match. I was glad that we were able to invite six guest speakers after we gathered a large number of candidates together and explained the purpose of the seminar with enthusiasm when making requests. Also, although we were not able to meet with the guest speakers and LGL members in person due to the COVID-19, it was good that we were able to communicate with them frequently and proceed the seminar smoothly.”.

Miki Callai (2^nd year, Department of Russian Studies) said, “It was difficult at times, but all the members did their best and we were able to contact each other whenever we needed help. I learned that when working as a team, it is important for each person to work hard and at the same time ask for help when needed.”

The career seminar was also a valuable opportunity for the residents who participated as guest speakers.

Guest speaker Junto Kashino (2nd year, Master’s Program in Science and Engineering), who was still in the midst of job hunting on the day of the event, said, “The international students who could not enter Japan but would like to get a job in Japan also came. The event itself was very short, yet they learnt something even a little. As a guest speaker, I felt very glad”. Fang Yinyue (4th year, Department of Economics), a resident who participated after completing her job hunting, said, “Most of the dorm students who attended the career seminar were not familiar with job hunting in Japan, so I shared the basics of job hunting and my own experiences. Language barriers, cultural barriers, institutional barriers… I think job hunting is much more difficult for international students than for Japanese students. In order to grab the opportunity of job hunting, hard work, patience, and learning are essential. But if you do your best, good results will surely be waiting for you!” – She gave a warm encouragement to the younger students.

It is not easy to work together with people from various backgrounds, but the sense of accomplishment when you overcome the difficulties is great. Those seminars seem to be fruitful events for both the participants and LGL who organized it. We hope they can continue to learn and grow together, taking advantage of each other’s strengths!
